The Light of Faith and the Darkness of Hypocrisy – In the Light of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, by Dr. Sa'id al-Qahtani, is a bilingual (French–Arabic) book that contrasts two fundamental realities of a believer's spiritual life: the light of faith that illuminates the heart, and hypocrisy that obscures it. The author defines īmān, details the means of acquiring and strengthening it, its fruits, its branches, as well as the qualities of sincere believers.
In a second stage, he addresses the notion of nifāq, distinguishes its two categories, outlines its characteristic traits and details its spiritual dangers, all grounded exclusively in the proofs of the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah.

The Light of Faith and the Darkness of Hypocrisy is a treatise by Dr. Sa'id al-Qahtani devoted to one of the essential foundations of Islamic belief. In the light of the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, the author sets two opposing realities side by side. They shape the believer's life. Faith is a source of light, guidance and success. Hypocrisy, by contrast, is a cause of misguidance and a darkening of the heart. This opposition, constantly recalled by the revealed texts, runs through the entire book. Allah brings believers out of darkness into light, while disbelief and hypocrisy lead to the opposite outcome.
The author's purpose is clearly stated. He sets out to explain the true nature of faith, the means of acquiring and strengthening it, and then presents the fruits it produces. At the same time, he defines hypocrisy with precision, distinguishes its categories, and warns against its consequences. This pedagogical approach helps the reader understand what strengthens faith while identifying the behaviours that may weaken it.
The book follows a methodical plan in two main parts, each divided into several sections outlined from the opening pages. Every theme is developed from the proofs of the Qur'an, authentic hadiths and the explanations of scholars. This approach carries the reader step by step from theoretical understanding to practical application in daily life.
Thus, the first chapter opens with a thorough definition of iman. The author recalls that authentic faith is neither a mere inner conviction nor a statement uttered by the tongue alone. It combines the speech of the heart, the speech of the tongue, and the deeds of the heart and limbs. It increases through obedience and decreases through disobedience.
The author also clarifies the notions of faith and islam, which sometimes denote the whole of religion and sometimes complementary aspects of it, depending on context. This distinction, grounded in the scriptural texts, lays the doctrinal foundation before addressing the means of developing and preserving faith.
The author presents fourteen concrete means of acquiring, strengthening and preserving faith. These include knowledge of Allah's most beautiful names, reflection upon the Qur'an, study of the Prophet Muhammad's Sunnah, contemplation of creation, and avoidance of sins, doctrinal ambiguities and desires. Together, they form a genuine path of spiritual education, in which knowledge, worship and upright conduct complement one another.
The author devotes a particularly rich section to the fruits of authentic faith. It draws Allah's protection, His pleasure and His guidance. It grants a peaceful life grounded in trust in Allah and tranquillity of heart. It also helps the believer show gratitude in times of ease and patience in times of trial. Finally, it opens the way to forgiveness, success and elevated ranks, both in this life and the next.
The book then presents the branches of faith, based on the well-known hadith stating that faith has more than seventy branches. Drawing on the classification of Imam al-Bayhaqi, the author sets out seventy-seven of them. They cover the foundations of belief, the deeds of the heart, acts of worship, moral qualities and conduct towards others — evidence that faith touches every dimension of a Muslim's life.
Finally, the first chapter closes with a portrait of believers drawn from the verses of the Qur'an: fear of Allah, faith that increases upon hearing His verses, trust in Him, steadfastness in prayer, keeping one's commitments, and the pursuit of sincerity. These qualities concretely illustrate the effects of authentic faith on daily conduct.
The second part of the book addresses the subject of nifaq with a method as rigorous as the one devoted to faith. The author gives its linguistic and religious definition, and clarifies the related notion of zandaqa. He then distinguishes two major categories. Major hypocrisy concerns matters of belief and removes a person from Islam. Minor hypocrisy concerns certain behaviours, without excluding their doer from religion. The author also explains the main differences between the two, in order to avoid any confusion.
The book gathers numerous verses and hadiths describing the traits of hypocrites. Among those mentioned are lying, duplicity, deceiving Allah and the believers, and sickness of the heart. Also noted are ostentation in acts of worship, laziness in prayer, and allying with the enemies of believers. This description is not meant to judge others. Rather, it invites every reader to examine their own heart and guard against it.
The author concludes by setting out the grave consequences of hypocrisy: the loss of light on the Day of Resurrection, being distanced from Allah's mercy, divine condemnation, and the nullification of good deeds. These effects extend beyond the individual and affect the whole community.
Through the richness of its Qur'anic and prophetic references and the clarity of its organisation, this book offers an accessible synthesis of the key questions surrounding faith and hypocrisy, despite its intended brevity. It combines definitions, classifications, scriptural proofs and practical applications in a doctrinal, spiritual and pedagogical approach, guiding the reader to understand the foundations of authentic faith and the means of nurturing it. Thus, The Light of Faith and the Darkness of Hypocrisy is not merely a theoretical account. It proposes a genuine path of inner reform, inviting the reader to develop authentic faith and to guard against the various forms of hypocrisy, in accordance with the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
